The Socialist Media Generation?

The 18-29 age group in this country is sometimes referred to as the Social Media Generation.  They have grown up in a world of Facebook, Google, Twitter, iPhones and iPads.

However, they do not seem to have an understanding of what has made these marvels of technology and social media possible.

Consider this recent poll by the Pew Research Center that found that 18-29 year Americans have a more positive than negative response toward Socialism. This is truly scary.

Does this generation realize that they would not enjoy any of their social media and technology toys were it not for capitalism?  Were any of the things they enjoy created in a socialist economy?

It is probably not surprising given this context that the most recent Pew Research Poll (10/28) also shows age 18-29 voters supporting Barack Obama 58%-31%.

We can only hope that this is the result of youthful inexperience and educational indoctrination by liberal teachers and professors.  Hopefully, they will wake up and smell the coffee as they mature and begin to understand how the world works.  It must be that the older you get, the wiser you seem to be.

Perhaps younger Americans should consider the words of Thomas Peterrfy.  I had never heard of Mr. Peterrfy until a week ago when I started seeing the tv commercial below that is running in Ohio and other swing states.  If you don't live in one of these states you probably have not seen it.  You should.  You should also forward it to a younger voter before Tuesday.

It is an incredibly effective commercial.  What is most amazing is that these tv spots were produced and paid by Mr. Peterrgy personally.  At the end of the commercial the video simply says, "Paid for by Thomas Peterffy".

Mr. Peterrfy knows of what he speaks.  He grew up in socialist Hungary.  Growing up in the Soviet sphere he saw first hand the poverty and the oppression of the people in a socialist state before immigrating to the United States in 1965.  Despite speaking no English when he came to America, he is now a billionaire after founding electronic brokerage firm Interactive Brokers.  You can get more background on Thomas Peterrfy and his reasons for producing the video in this Forbes article.

Here’s the transcript thanks to The Washington Examimer:
I grew up in a socialist country and I have seen what that does to people. There is no hope, no freedom, no pride in achievement. The nation became poorer and poorer and that is what I see happening here. As a young boy I was fantasizing about one day going to America, making a success of myself – the American dream. America’s wealth comes from the efforts of people striving for success. Take away their incentive with badmouthing success and you take away the wealth that helps us to take care of the needy. Yes, in socialism in the rich will be poorer – but the poor will also be poorer. People lose interest in really working hard and creating jobs. I think this is a very slippery slope. It seems like people don’t learn from the past. That is why I am voting Republican and putting this ad on television.
I am Thomas Peterffy and I am responsible for the content of this advertisement.

Mr. Peterffy said in the Forbes article that the tv commercials were scheduled to run on CNN, CNBC and Bloomberg. I believe I also saw it on Fox News Channel.

Based on the poll above I think that Mr. Peterrfy should have also bought time on the Comedy Channel, MTV and E!

Where else in the world could an immigrant like Thomas Peterrfy enjoy this type of success and also be able to talk about it freely?  Nowhere but in the United States of America.  It is only possible because of   capitalism and freedom.
