This and That---May 17, 2024 Edition

A few random observations, charts and factoids to provide some context on what is going on in the world.

The Two-Faces of Joe Biden

In 2019 Joe Biden criticized Donald Trump for imposing tariffs on Chinese goods entering the country.

He said a freshman econ student or a cashier at Target understood economics better than Trump.

Biden maintained that the tariffs would be paid by American consumers.

This is the 2024 version of Joe Biden who this week imposed import tariffs of 100% on electric vehicles and 50% on solar panels coming from China.

He is also implementing a 25% tariff on lithium batteries that are necessary for EV's and solar energy  storage and backup.

What is even more confusing about all of this is Biden wants to mandate that all Americans drive electric vehicles at the same time he is making them even more expensive.

The same goes for solar power---he wants to ban all coal, oil and natural gas energy sources in favor of renewables such as solar, at the same time he is making it all the more expensive for Americans.

Is it dementia, dishonesty or duplicity?

The A's Have It

We have reached the point where 40% of all names of newborn girls end with the letter "A".

100 years ago it was half of that.

The Social Security Administration recently published its list of the most popular girls and boys name for births in 2023.

8 of the most popular 10 female names end with "A" and 6 of the first 7.

Charlotte and Evelyn are the only names that do not end in "A" in the Top 10.

Male names are more evenly spread over the alphabet.

Is There Something In The Water?

On the subject of males and females, I thought this was an interesting  data comparing self-perception of men and women on their masculinity and femininity by generation.

90% of Boomer men say they are "completely/mostly" masculine, only 57% of Gen Z men do.

Almost all 65+ year old men say they feel masculine but only 57% of 17-27 year old Gen Z's do?

Similarly, while 87% of Boomer women say they're "completely/mostly" feminine, only 67% of Gen Z women do.

Are we doomed?

Is there something in the water?

Is it the education system?

The huge number of vaccines that have been introduced over the last 30 years?

Social media?

Is it a combination of a number of factors?

You have to wonder if what we are seeing in self-perception scores regarding one's gender are related to increasing levels of depressive symptoms in 8th, 10th and 12th graders in the United States.

iPhone introduced in 2007.

It might have more to do with smartphones and social media than the water or anything else.

Gold Medal Speed

There are four young men at a suburban Houston, Texas high school I am confident have no issues with self-perception relating to their masculinity,

The 4x100 meter relay team at Atascocita High School in Humble, Texas recently won the Texas 6A state championship with a time of 39.14 seconds.

That is less than an average of 10 seconds for the 100 meters for all four of the team members.

To put that in context, this team of four teenagers at one Texas high school had a time that would have won the 4x100 meter relay at the Big Ten track championship,

Another Texas high school, Duncanville, would have placed third at the Big Ten finals.

Here are the times of the top nine teams in the 6A Texas high school finals.

Six other Texas high schools had faster times than Michigan State.

Source: https://twitter.com/Milosbets/status/1790067305021423933

Atascocita and Duncanville would have placed 1st and 2nd in the mens's ACC track finals.

Atascocita would have placed 2nd to USC at the PAC 12 finals. Duncanville would have captured third.

Keep in mind that these colleges can literally recruit anyone in the world to run for their schools.

Atascocita is confined to the boundaries to that of a high school district as are these other Texas track teams.

For additional context, here are the women's 4x100 meter relay times in the 2020 Olympic Games.

Source: https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/tokyo-2020/results/athletics/women-s-4-x-100m-relay

Atascocita H.S. would have won the gold medal in the women's 4x100 by almost two seconds over the Jamaica national team.

Duncanville H.S. would have taken the silver medal.

North Shore H.S would have taken the bronze medal.

Even the 8th place team in the Texas high school track meet would have won the gold medal competing in the 2020 women's Olympic finals.

In fact, if the top eight Texas high schools were running in the women's 4x100, at the 2020 Olympics, they would have taken all spots from 1-8 in the finals.  The 8th team in the women's Olympic final (the Netherlands) did not finish.

Of course, we are told there are no physical differences between men and women.

The only thing that matters is how someone "identifies" in their own mind.

And men who identify as women should be allowed to compete in women's athletic despite the genetic differences.

Just ignore the fact that teenage boys at just eight high schools in Texas can run faster than the fastest, most elite women athletes in the world.

The woke policies of the liberal progressives are utter and complete insanity if you care anything about women's athletics.

Who Should Be Trump's VP?

Who should be Trump's VP?

Since both Biden and Trump have collected enough delegates to be the nominees for President of their respective parties, the only real question remaining is who will be the VP candidate on the Republican side in November.

Donald Trump is sure to tease and tantalize with various names over the next several months.

However, which name would provide Trump with the biggest boost in November?

As I see it, Trump should be looking at three main criteria in who would be the best VP candidate to run with.

First, the individual should clearly be ready and able to lead the country should it be required in the next four years.

Trump will be 78 years old in June. He appears in good health and is clearly more fit and has more vigor and vitality than Biden. However, it still must be remembered that Trump will be older in November, 2024 than Ronald Reagan was when he left office at the end of his second term.

Of course, Joe Biden is four years older than Trump as if anyone needs to be reminded as we watch as he feebly fumbles his way around day after day.

Second, Trump should be selecting someone who is young enough and capable enough to carry on the MAGA agenda going forward.

Trump will only be able to serve one more term. Therefore, it is important that Trump selects an individual that can be loyal to the Trump agenda through that remaining term but who is also seen as a worthy successor to carry on that agenda and legacy into the future.

Third, Trump needs to select someone who the establishment fears almost as much as they abhor Trump. Trump needs to understand that if he is re-elected the establishment will almost certainly be working from day one to remove him.

That risk is heightened if the VP successor is someone the establishment believes "they can work with". Simply stated, Trump needs a VP with a strong backbone that will not be afraid to stand up to the D.C. and media establishment.

A strong VP that is feared and fearless inoculates Trump from attempts to unseat him over the next four years. (This consideration is not an original thought of mine but I think it needs to be an important factor in Trump's selection process).

I believe one of the big reasons that the D.C. Democrat establishment has not pushed Joe Biden out of the 2024 race is Kamala Harris.

Biden's pick of Kamala as VP has boxed them in.

There is no question they can read the polls and see Biden's poor job approval.

They see that Biden is losing to Donald Trump in the overall poll results and in every key battleground state.

However, they fear putting Kamala on the ballot more than they fear the risk they take in keeping Biden in place. She is polling worse than Joe.

Let's take these three considerations and match these up with some of the names that we hear most often as potential VP candidates for Trump.

Those names are Tim Scott, Ben Carson, Kristi Noem, Tulsi Gabbard, Doug Burgum, Vivek Ramaswamy, Tucker Carlson, Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance and Ron DeSantis.

I have tried to be objective in my analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the potential candidates but in the end assessments like this always involve subjective judgments.

There is only one potential candidate I see as checking all the necessary boxes.

Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida.

Let's take a look at how I come to that conclusion looking at the three criteria above.

Ready and Prepared

DeSantis is ready and prepared. He was in Congress for three terms and is in his second term as the Governor of Florida which is the third most populous state in the union.

Kristi Noem served four terms in Congress and is also serving in her second term as Governor of South Dakota. However, South Dakota is not Florida. It ranks 46th in population with less than 1 million in population. Florida has seven counties larger than the entire state population of South Dakota.

Tim Scott has served in both Congress and the U.S. Senate but has no state executive experience.

Marco Rubio is in his third term as a U.S. Senator and was previously the Speaker of the Florida House. However, he also does not have any executive experience.

Tulsi Gabbard served four terms in the U.S. House as a Democrat.

Burgum is in his second term as Governor of North Dakota. He also was a successful businessman and is estimated to be worth over $1 billion.

Carson, Ramaswamy and Carlson have never been elected to any office.

None of the candidates is better prepared and ready to serve as VP than DeSantis.

Carry on the Legacy

An important consideration here is that the potential candidate must be philosophically aligned with the Trump agenda but also of an age that you project that they can be a force for at least the next 12 years (a four year Trump term and an additional two terms beyond).

On age alone, Ben Carson does not qualify. Carson will be 73 this year.

Burgum will be 68 this year.

No one proved more loyal to the Trump agenda during the GOP primary than Ramaswamy. He will be 39 later this year and has a long political runway ahead. However, he has never held elective office and many think he is not ready for prime time despite all of his gifts.

Tucker Carlson is aligned with the Trump agenda. He is at the right age (55) and would be a real out-of-the box pick by Trump. Rumor has it that Melania has urged Trump to select Tucker. However, he has never held elective office. It is hard to make the case that he is ready and prepared.

Rubio and Scott could both be described as lukewarm Trump supporters. Both ran against him for the GOP Presidential nomination. However, both have age on their side compared to some of the other potential VP's (Rubio is 53 this year., Scott is 59).

Tulsi Gabbard is the right age but spent her entire political life as a Democrat until recently. I can't see Trump trusting her with his legacy.

Kristi Noem is the right age (53) and is a strong conservative but is not battle tested. She also is currently dealing with bad press in light of the story that she shot one of the dogs on her farm at one point.

J.D. Vance might have the strongest attributes on this score. He is young (age 40), has been loyal to Trump for a long time and almost all of his policy positions have been very much aligned with Trump since he first ran for the Senate and was endorsed by Trump.  His biggest negative is he has not even been in the Senate for two years at this point. However, that did not stop Barack Obama.

DeSantis is the right age (46 this year) and there is not much difference in his core principles and positions compared to Trump. In fact, that was probably a big reason he never could gain traction in the primary battle with Trump.

DeSantis is of the age he could serve four years as VP and another eight years in the Oval Office and still not be 60 years old. None of the other candidates can match his experience, his alignment with Trump on the important issues and his age in looking for someone to carry on a Trump legacy.

Is Feared and Fearless

The number of candidates who can be said to check this box is small.

Ramaswamy and Carlson have the attributes but neither has really been tested when it counts---in a political office when you are under fire from the establishment media. Ramaswamy showed he has the potential when he ran for the GOP nomination and Tucker showed a lot of backbone in standing up to the Fox News honchos but they have never really been in the ring of fire.

Vance also appears to have the necessary attributes but has never been tested on a national stage.

Again, DeSantis has shown he is not afraid to take a strong stand nor back down to the political, corporate or media establishments.

He got in the ring against Trump which was not easy.

He was the only high profile politician to challenge the Covid hysteria and apply common sense protocols when nobody else had the courage to do so.

He was not afraid to take on Disney when he had to.

He has not backed down when the media establishment has attacked him.

DeSantis gets a strong checkmark on the Feared and Fearless box.

DeSantis by a large margin

The analysis I did above shows that DeSantis should be Trump's VP by a large margin.

My analysis is supported by an Economist/YouGov poll in March that showed that DeSantis has the highest net approval to be Trump's VP of any of those polled in that survey.

This is the detailed demographic breakdown for DeSantis in that poll.

There is no group in which DeSantis does not poll well as Trump's running mate.

Source: https://d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/econTabReport_mTlzQOB.pdf#page=73

Bill Mitchell, was a huge Trump supporter in the 2016 primaries and through the general election, He turned  against Trump in the 2024 primaries and was a vocal advocate for DeSantis.

He makes a further argument for DeSantis as Trump's VP on Twitter.

It is hard to argue with Mitchell's reasoning.

To use a business analogy, Trump would be the CEO and DeSantis the COO.

Both men bring unique gifts that complement each other.

The obstacles to DeSantis becoming Trump's VP

The most obvious obstacle is that Trump did not take kindly to being challenged by DeSantis in the GOP primary.

Trump had endorsed DeSantis in the Republican primary to run for Governor in Florida in 2018.

When DeSantis narrowly won the general election Trump undoubtedly felt he had a major hand in getting DeSantis elected.

Trump viewed DeSantis as disloyal in running against him in 2024.

Trump (as he is known to do) said some nasty things about DeSantis in the campaign that may not be easy for the Florida governor to forget and forgive.

As I stated above, no one in the Republican Party has the potential political future ahead of them that Ron DeSantis has due to his combination of experience and age.

Signing on as Trump's VP carries with it the potential for big rewards as well but also carries big risks for DeSantis,

If a Trump/DeSantis ticket wins in November, DeSantis has the inside track for 2028.

However, he also takes the risk of further damaging his political brand if a Trump/DeSantis ticket were to lose in November.

It is a high stakes decision for DeSantis if Trump even asks him to join him as his VP candidate.

Another big obstacle is the 12th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which states that when an elector of any state votes in the electoral college at least one of either the President or Vice President candidates must be an inhabitant of another state than the elector.

The relevant wording of the 12th Amendment reads as follows as ratified on June 15, 1804.

I have bolded the key language.

The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and all persons voted for as Vice-President and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate;

If Trump selects DeSantis (or Rubio) a constitutional issue is presented as they are both inhabitants of Florida which would preclude the electors in that state from voting for both Trump and DeSantis (or Rubio) as they are all inhabitants of Florida.

If the national electoral vote margin is large enough the fact that the Florida electors could not vote for Trump or DeSantis would not be a problem as they might have enough electoral votes anyway. However, we are talking about 30 electoral votes in Florida---the third largest state total.

If, for example, the Florida electors cast their votes for Trump but could not do so for DeSantis due to the 12th Amendment, and had to cast them for another Republican, in a close election there might not be any VP candidate that garners the 270 necessary electoral votes. In such an event, the VP would be selected by a vote in the U.S. Senate.

The solution is to have either Trump or DeSantis declare residency in a state other than Florida before the election. This would be similar to what Dick Cheney did when George W. Bush named him his VP candidate in 2000 and Cheney declared residency in Wyoming (where he previously lived) even though he had been living in Texas recent years.

It is doubtful that DeSantis or Rubio could justify moving out of Florida. They are lifelong residents of the state. They both still have school-age children. To do so, they would also have to resign their elected political offices representing the people of Florida.

On the other hand, Trump is a life-long New Yorker and also has a residence at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey that he often inhabits in the summer.

Would Trump be willing to change his residence back to the Northeast to accommodate having DeSantis or Rubio on the ticket with him?

It would be a huge sacrifice for Trump (just on the tax costs of doing so alone) to leave Florida.

However, I actually believe that it would be hugely beneficial for Trump from a political perspective.

The Democrats like to portray Trump as egocentric and selfish.

Moving out of the state in order to insure the very best person can be on the ticket in conformance with the U.S. Constitution would make a huge statement. It would be a selfless act where Trump  clearly shows he is putting the national interests ahead of any personal interests.

It would completely counter the Democrat narrative about Trump's ego and selfishness although you can be sure that the Democrats would argue that Trump and the Republicans are playing games with the Constitution.

The Betting Odds

Irrespective of the logic and common sense of a Trump-DeSantis ticket, the obstacles seem too great to overcome to make it a reality.

That seems to be reinforced by the latest political betting odds.

There are not many who are willing to put their money down on Trump selecting DeSantis as his running mate at the current time.

He are the favorites in the Predictit.org betting site as of May 14, 2024.

DeSantis is at 2 cents. For context, Nikki Haley is at 3 cents.

DeSantis is at a 2% chance on this betting site.

Interestingly, Doug Burgum does not even show up on this betting site. If you believe it will be Burgum I guess you just bet "Other Man".

In the end, Trump's VP will not be determined by my analysis or the betting markets.

It is fun to speculate or guess. about Trimp's VP pick

You can be sure that Trump will play it out for as long as he can as the speculation leads to more air time and discussion about Trump and his campaign.

However, in the end, Donald Trump alone will make the decision and that means all bets are off.

There is only one thing that is certain.

Trump's selection will be better than that of Joe Biden's choice of Kamala Harris four years ago.

That is any easy bet to make.

Fossil Fuels, the Sun and the Future of Mankind

How long have have you heard that oil, natural gas and coal are fossil fuels?

Of course, fossils are the remains of living organisms.

We have been told that fossil fuels have been formed naturally as part of a geological process involving the interaction of the remains of dead animals (such as dinosaurs) and plants with the earth's crust.

These fuels contain hydrogen and carbon which can be burned for energy.

It is claimed that carbon emissions from the burning of those fossil fuels is the cause of climate change.

If all of this is true, how does one explain this headline reporting that NASA believes there are more liquid hydrocarbons on Saturn's moon, Titan, than all of the known oil and gas reserves on earth.

Source: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/titans-surface-organics-surpass-oil-reserves-on-earth

Surface organics?

Fossil fuels?

Titan's average temperature is minus 179 degrees Celsius or minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do those temperatures sustain any organic or animal life as we know it?

Is the term "fossil fuels" a fable?

Is it possible that the process by which our most important energy sources are formed comes about in ways that we do not fully understand?

If that is the case, is the entire climate change agenda based on concerns about carbon emissions from those fuel sources also based on faulty assumptions?

Let's also consider the largest energy source on earth---the sun.

The big news this past weekend was the geomagnetic storm that occurred on earth when several large sun spots produced significant solar flares.

These geomagnetic solar storms raise significant concerns about disruptions to communications, the electric grid, navigation and radio and satellite operations.

A massive geomagnetic storm in 1859 that came to be known as the Carrington Event melted telegraph wires and disrupted the machines that transmitted the messages.

It’s been conjectured that a storm on the scale of the Carrington event, if it happened today, could cause an internet apocalypse, sending large numbers of people and businesses offline. For this reason, the U.K. government lists adverse space weather as one of the most serious natural hazards in its National Risk Register, and companies have contingency plans to deal with severe events — as long as they have sufficient warning of them.

Researchers from Lloyd's of London and the Atmospheric and Environmental Research agency in the U.S. have estimated that a Carrington-class event today would result in between $0.6 and $2.6 trillion in damages to the U.S. alone, according to NASA spaceflight.

It should be a reminder that what happens with our sun is many, many times more determinative of the climate on earth than anything man may be responsible for.

The sun spots that produced the flares are 15-16 times the diameter of Earth.

The area where the sun spots are on the sun is now rotating away from the earth lowering the immediate risk for any geomagnetic disruptions.

However, the area of the sun spots will once again line up with the earth in 2-3 weeks.

A massive solar flare that erupts at the same time that the earth is in direct alignment with the sun spot area could result in a lot more than the beautiful northern lights (aurora borealis) that were seen as far south as Alabama this weekend. In 1859, during the Carrington Event, northern lights were visible as far south as Cuba.

Here is a beautiful image of the Aurora Borealis taken by BeeLine reader Reed W. in Boise, Idaho on Saturday night.

Some scientists have postulated that sun spot activity has an effect on the earth's climate. Fewer sun spots result in lower temperatures and more sun spots result in higher temperatures in the thermosphere (the uppermost layer of air in our atmosphere). I wrote about this relationship in a blog post in 2018 entitled "Cold Will Be A Real Crisis".

Sun spot activity historically has ebbed and flowed over what is normally an 11-year cycle period.

The last minimum was in 2019 when there were no observable sun spots. Since that time we have seen increasing sun spot activity that is predicted to reach its maximum in 2025.

We are now in what scientists have classified as Solar Cycle 25.

The number of sun spots has already exceeded the maximum number in Cycle 24 but activity still remains below the levels seen in the 1980-2000 period.

Source: https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/sun-is-ramping-up-activity-but-still-within-predictions/

However, both Solar Cycles 24 and 25 have much lower solar activity compared to the average of the last 300 years.

Source: https://judithcurry.com/2023/07/04/solar-activity-solar-cycle-25-surpasses-cycle-24/

Is there anything we can do about sun spots and solar flares? No.

Is there anything that humans can do about climate change that would have any material effect on life on earth that would counter the forces of nature? Also no.

The only thing that is certain is that by banning those energy sources that made the industrial revolution possible and improved every aspect of the lives of almost everyone on earth is a gigantic risk to all of mankind.

Coal, oil and natural gas made the industrial revolution possible.

Before that we relied on wind, solar, water and horsepower.

Note the difference in the chart below.

There was not much in the way of human progress for thousands of years before those hydrocarbons started powering our world.

Energy makes the world economy go. We need it for anything we want to do. It needs to be available and it needs to be affordable. The economy does not work without energy. The consumer cannot spend on other things in the economy if they are spending excessive amounts on energy. If the consumer doesn't spend, the economy does not grow. If the economy does not grow, more and more people go without jobs.

When muscle power was the prime energy source in the world we could produce very little. Firewood and domesticated animals improved our ability to produce. However, the introduction of energy sources like coal, oil and gas allowed us to greatly leverage our productive capacity.

It is not a coincidence that the industrial revolution coincided with the introduction of so-called fossil fuels beginning with coal and moving on to oil and gas and the development of machines that were powered by these energy sources.

Considering all of these FACTS why would anyone be willing to spend trillions of dollars believing it is in any way possible to overcome the power of natural and divine forces?

If all of this is not crazy enough consider how useful it is for some high profile Democrat politicians to blame climate change for any and everything in the world today.

Why is there so much illegal immigration and chaos at the southern border?

Climate change according to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Why has California gone from a $100 billion surplus to what is now projected to be at least $56 billion over the next two fiscal years.

Governor Gavin Newsom says it is due to climate change.

Link: https://twitter.com/search?q=Newsom%20climate%20change&src=typed_query

Why is climate change so useful to use as a reason for most any problem on earth?

It is because the climate will always be changing----it will rain too much or too little, it will be too hot or too cold, the wind will blow too hard or not hard enough.

How can a politician ever be wrong in blaming almost anything on climate change?

It is a wonder that previous generations of politicians did not think of that tactic long ago.

Then again, how likely is it that previous generations of voters would be naive and gullible enough to believe any of this malarkey (one of Joe Biden's favorite words)?

It would all be laughable until one considers the risks to mankind if these politicians actually succeed in their misguided agenda to rid the planet of the hydrocarbons that power humanity on Earth at the same time they are overflowing on Saturn's moon Titan.

Rewriting History

The last few years have seen us told time and time again what is supposed to be the truth and what we are supposed to believe.

That was especially true with Covid.

The headlines this week are revealing that what we were told on a number of issues appears to have been anything but the truth.

Origins of Covid

For example, a Congressional committee disclosed this week that it was in possession of a document from 2020 in which the State Department suggests that Covid resulted from a leak at the Wuhan, China lab and that the Communist Chinese party was actively involved in covering up and obstructing an investigation of the origins of the virus.

Source: https://twitter.com/COVIDSelect/status/1787980593164058743

How many times did Tony Fauci and other government officials state that Covid most likely had a natural origin?

Astra Zeneca Covid Vaccine Pulled From Market

We also saw the headline this week that Astra Zeneca had pulled its Covid vaccine worldwide after admitting that it could cause life threatening blood clots.

This was the headline in December, 2020 as the Oxford produced AstraZeneca Covid vaccine was being introduced in the U.K.

You may recall that distribution of the Johnson and Johnson Covid vaccine was suspended in 2023 for similar concerns about blood clots.

Could we eventually see the same in the future regarding the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines?

Rewriting history?

The Cuomo Covid Double Team

The Cuomo brothers---former New York Governor Andrew and media star were also rewriting history this week.

Former Governor Cuomo who enforced some of the strictest and longest-lasting Covid lockdowns and mandates now says it was all voluntary. He did not have enforcement power for any of it.

Since when is an "order" voluntary?

Source: https://saratogaliving.com/cuomo-statewide-shutdown-new-york/

Meanwhile Chris Cuomo was on MSNBC most of the pandemic promoting the vaccine, criticizing those who did not want to get vaccinated and joined the chorus of other media types denigrating ivermectin.

Chris Cuomo now says that he has Long Covid (or is it an adverse reaction to the vaccine?) and is having good results taking ivermectin to treat it.

Rewriting history?

Let it be remembered that on all of these topics involving Covid there were those who challenged the government narrative and were either censored or called out for spreading misinformation.

It seems that there are a lot of people today who are trying to rewrite history in order for all of that to be forgotten,

Click here for a 3 minute compilation of how Covid history is being rewritten.

It would be humorous if it were not so troubling.

Political Relativity

Almost all elections for political office in the United States represent a binary choice.

There are the occasional races where there might be an Independent, a Libertarian, Green Party candidate or someone else, but generally voting for a third party candidate is more principled than practical.

It usually requires answering this question when you walk into the voting booth.

Do you want to vote for the Republican or Democrat candidate?

Voting when you do not like either candidate is particularly difficult.

Who is the least bad choice?

This is the world of political relativity.

For many in 2024, it is their reality when it comes to voting in November.

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have a lot of negatives with voters.

Credit: NBC News

What makes this election even more interesting is that it is almost as if two incumbents are running against each other since Trump's first term is still fresh in people's minds.

A CNN poll released last week provides some perspectives on what voters are thinking.

Biden has a net negative job approval of -20 points. 40% approve, 60% disapprove.

61% say Biden's presidency has been a failure. 39% say it has been a success.

Biden has a net favorability rating of -23 points. 35% favorable, 58% unfavorable.

Donald Trump has a net favorability rating of -16 points. 37% favorable, 53% unfavorable.

When Trump left office in January, 2021, 55% of voters judged it to be a failure.

45% said it was a success.

When voters are asked that question today, 55% of voters in the CNN poll now rate the Trump presidency as a success.

Why the change in attitude?

The passage of time and political relativity.

Joe Biden's time in office has provided some perspective for voters in judging Trump's tenure.

In July, 2021, most political pundits did not give Trump much of a chance in 2024.

I wrote a blog post at that time assessing whether Trump would be a viable candidate in 2024.

I laid out a scenario in which Biden/Harris running the country into the ground could make Trump look a lot more attractive to voters.

An implosion of the country under the Democrats and Biden/Harris. Trump has many critics but hard times have a way of focusing people on what is most important. Trump's personality is the most cited reason why many did not like him. When people are in trouble they are less concerned with personality and more concerned about performance. A deteriorating situation in the country will make Trump a lot more attractive to more people than you can imagine.

That appears to be where we are.

Looking deeper at the data in the CNN poll, 17% of voters say they have an unfavorable view of both Trump and Biden.

That puts those voters directly in a place that political relativity means they have to make the least bad choice.

Those voters, if forced to choose, would break 43% for Trump and 31% for Biden according to the CNN poll. However, a quarter of those voters (4% of the electorate) say they would vote for someone else or not vote at all.

Another interesting data point in the CNN poll is the degree to which voters have ruled out voting for one candidate or the other.

52% of voters state that there is no chance they will vote for Biden while 47% state that there is no chance they will vote for Trump.

Let's compare some of the key data points in the CNN poll when it comes to political relativity.

Net favorability

Biden -23   Trump  -16.    Trump  +7

Presidency was a success                                                Biden 39%   Trump  55%   Trump +16

Unfavorable opinion of both but if forced to choose    Biden 31%.  Trump 43%   Trump +12

No chance they would vote for                                        Biden 52%   Trump 47%   Trump +5

When it comes to political relativity in the CNN poll, Trump wins on every measure.

A major factor in the votes of many people involves the economy and the voters personal financial situation.

A Morning Consult/Blomberg poll from last week that focused on these questions with voters in swing states offers more perspective on the question of political relativity and the fact that this election is very much a comparison of two incumbents.

On the question of whether the U.S. economy was better under the Biden administration or the  Trump administration, Trump is +16.

When you have two candidates who both have high unfavorable ratings it makes it more difficult for the voters.

However, it also requires that the voter focus more on policy than on personality.

Trump's prior record in comparison to Biden is working in his favor just as I predicted it might three years ago.

However, none of this is easy for many voters.

One example is Trump's former Attorney General Bill Barr.

Barr has been critical of Trump, especially regarding his refusal to graciously accept the results of the 2020 election.

He does not have a high opinion of Trump. However, his fears are much greater with Biden and the Democrats in charge.

Barr breaks it down this way.

Barr says you are playing Russian roulette with Trump but committing national suicide with Biden.

“I’ve said all along given two bad choices, I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country and in my mind that’s — I will vote the Republican ticket. I will support the Republican ticket,” Barr said.

“I think the real danger to the country, the real danger to democracy, as I say, is the progressive agenda and I’ve said Trump may be playing Russian roulette, but continuation of the Biden administration is national suicide in my opinion,” he said.

Bill Barr understands political relativity very well.

Of course, despite any complaints about the choices involved in 2024, I hope everyone in the United States appreciates the fact that they have a choice.

Many in the world are not so fortunate.

If you want to know why Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world you need look no further than the choices that have been provided to the Iranian people since the Islamists took over in the late 1970's.

Even Revolutionaries Get Hungry and Thirsty

Early Tuesday morning a group of Palestinian sympathizers forcibly took over a building on the Columbia University campus.

Later in the day this woman, who has been identified in media reports as Johannah King-Slutzky,  appeared before the media and demanded that the protesters be given "basic humanitarian aid" from the university so that "they do not die of starvation and dehydration".

You break in and take over a campus building and you don't think to bring food and water?

You then ask the university to deliver it to you?

They need water?  The protestors might die from dehydration?

What is wrong with the drinking fountains in the building or the tap water in the rest rooms?

Do the protestors have to drink Perrier or mountain spring bottled water or they will die of thirst?

King-Slutzky is said to be a PhD student at Columbia as well as an instructor at the school.

She apparently teaches in the English department.

What is King-Slutzky writing her dissertation on ?

(Note: This bio material has now been scrubbed from the Columbia website after the media attention that Ms. King-Slutzky received. She states she has also been suspended from Columbia).

"Theories of the imagination and poetry as interpreted through a Marxian lens in order to update and propose an alternative to historicist ideological critiques of the Romantic imagination?"

What does that even mean?

How is studying that going to make the world a better place or add value to anyone's life?

Is it any surprise that this woman was involved in the campus chaos at Columbia and is also a political strategist for leftist and progressive causes and is active in the higher education labor movement?

An article in the National Review provided some additional biographical details about Johannah King-Slutzky.

According to her LinkedIn page, King-Slutzky is a union steward with the United Auto Workers (UAW) and claims to get “most excited for leftist causes and candidates tackling big issues like labor rights, income inequality, and racial equity.” The Columbia teacher was Refinery29’s Director of Tumblr, where she “developed original video content about social justice issues like Islamophobia,” before she left the post in 2017 to take a more “active” role in democracy by advising the anti-semitic Council on American-Islamic Relations.

You might wonder how a graduate student and instructor as Columbia University can be a union steward for the United Auto Workers?

The UAW is the union representing research and teaching assistants at Columbia.

The UAW turned to organizing in higher education as the number of auto worker jobs disappeared to Japan, Mexico and China.

How much did the Democrat party do to save those jobs?

There is a reason that so many auto workers and other blue collar manufacturing workers support Donald Trump.

You can also assume that when Joe Biden says he has the rank and file support of the UAW he is referring to unionized university employees.

King-Slutzky is writing a dissertation romanticizing Karl Marx and collectivism, supporting Palestine/Hamas in the campus protests, wants Columbia to cut all of its financial ties with Israel, sees Islamophobia as a social justice issue and claims to be concerned about anti-Semitism?

Our student loan funds are going to pay for whatever she is teaching in the classroom (and perhaps her own student loans) and Biden and the Democrats want to cancel the loans?

Here are the demands of the Columbia students who refer to themselves as "Columbia University Apartheid Divest".

Their #1 demand is that Columbia divest of any companies or institutions that profit from Israel.

That standard would mean that most everything in Columbia's $14 billion endowment would have to be divested. U.S. Treasuries would obviously have to be divested. Stock in companies such as Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft. Exxon, Nvidia and the like as well. What large cap companies are not selling products into Israel?

Columbia might be forced to invest its entire endowment in the Iranian dinar (rial) to be safe. I bet that would produce a nice return for those scholarships and financial aid paid for by the endowment to offset Columbia's average annual cost of attendance of $89,857.

What about Russia? Is it ok to invest in companies who do business there?

Somehow the list of demands of the revolutionaries also includes defunding public safety on the Columbia campus and severing all ties with the NYPD. How does this have anything to do with Israel or Palestine?

Could someone help me make sense of any of this?

We are in a place today that is well beyond my level of comprehension.

Would someone at least be a humanitarian and bring me food and  drink so that I can contemplate all of this over a nice meal and attempt to make sense of this?

Five Facts From April, 2024

BeeLine is rooted in facts and data. It is the foundation from which everything I write is based.

Five facts from BeeLine posts in April and in my research during the past month that I  thought were particularly salient, surprising, or stupefying.

In a world in which opinions seem to be based more on feelings, emotions and prevailing narratives it might make sense to put more focus on straightforward facts, data and truths.

Consider these facts and data and consider the context they provide to the larger issues of our world today.

Global Energy

Economic progress in the world is inextricably linked to energy.

How many years are remaining of the principal worldwide energy sources?

In looking at the years of life of oil reserves today, it should be kept in mind that in 1980  the best estimate was that we had 30 years of proven reserves remaining. Improved exploration and extraction technologies have kept reserves increasing faster than production and consumption. It is possible that could be the case in the future.

Of course, so-called renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are potentially limitless but we currently are a long way from being able to depend on these to power our world.

Perhaps there is a reason that China and India are building all of those coal-fired electric generation plants?

China now emits more carbon emissions than the United States and Europe combined and those emissions are not coming down anytime soon.

Abortions and Deaths

Here is a fact that I am sure you have never heard before unless you read BeeLine regularly.

Last year there were more abortions performed in the world than the total number of global deaths.

To put it into better context, there are seven times more abortions annually than those who die from heart disease and six times more than die from cancer.

During the last four years, there were 42 times as many induced abortions globally than were reported as Covid deaths.

What is the major difference in our perceptions of these issues? With Covid we saw a tabulation of deaths every day for the better part of three years. In the other case the actual numbers are never mentioned.

Now consider the above when also assessing the declining total fertility rate (TFR) of women in various countries in the world.

A TFR of 2.1 per woman in any society is necessary to maintain a stable population.

A TFR below that number means that the population of that society will decline over time.

The United States is at 1.6. It has never been lower in its history.

Russia is at 1.8.

Germany is at 1.4.

Japan is at 1.4.

China is now at 1.2.

Italy is also at 1.2.

Spain is at 1.1.

South Korea is at .7

Ukraine is at .7.

Even India's TFR has fallen to below the replacement rate at 1.9.

You not only need affordable energy sources, you also need people to have a functioning society and economy.

Will we reach a point at which abortion will become illegal in some parts of the world for the simple reason that society will collapse otherwise?

Inflation

We all know that inflation has taken a toll on the American household over the last several years.

However, I have not seen a better graphical representation that brings it home as this chart of the increase in fast food prices over the last 10 years.

Notice that most of the price increases have occurred since 2019.

Prices at McDonald's have doubled over the last decade.

They are up 80% in the last five years.

The prices at McDonald's and the grocery store are a big reason that 71% of voters disapprove of Biden's handling of inflation that was reported in a CNN poll that came out earlier this week.

All Job Gains Going To Foreign Born Workers

The Democrats are busy proclaiming how great the economy is and how many jobs have been created since Biden took office and how Trump presided over a loss in employment.

Here is Nancy Pelosi getting angry on MSNBC earlier this week when she was reminded that job losses under Trump and the "record" job gains for Biden were due to a global pandemic.

Link: https://twitter.com/kylenabecker/status/1785044208736240002

Who is getting those jobs in the United States?

The most recent employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that over the last year the number of foreign born workers increased by 1.3 million. On the other hand, workers who were native born declined by 651,000.

If we go back to December, 2019 (right before the pandemic), there were 131,281,000 native born employed workers in the United States and 27,223,000 foreign born workers according to the BLS historical data.

In March, 2024, the number of native born workers had fallen to 130,242,000 ( a decrease of over 1 million jobs held by native born Americans) while foreign born workers had risen to 31,114,000 ( an increase of 3,891,000 jobs held by foreign born workers).

Some of the reduction in native born workers can be explained by Baby Boomers retiring in increasing numbers. However, those workers are not being replaced with their children or grandchildren. They are being replaced with foreign born workers of which a large number undoubtedly entered the country illegally.

Chocaholic Alert

Last month I highlighted the amazing fact that cocoa commodity prices had risen so dramatically this year that cocoa was more expensive than copper.

When I wrote the blog post, cocoa was trading at $10,758/ton and copper was at $9,240/ton.

Considering that copper prices were already so high that thieves were stripping copper all over the place to sell for its recycling value, I cautioned that it might be time to lock up your chocolate.

Cocoa prices eventually rose to over $12,000/ton last month but recent days have seen the price falling back to the $10,000/ton range. Down 1.5% in the last month.

Copper has been rising but is still trading below cocoa. Up 13.3% over the last month.

My advice is to keep both your copper and chocolate locked up.
