Even Revolutionaries Get Hungry and Thirsty

Early Tuesday morning a group of Palestinian sympathizers forcibly took over a building on the Columbia University campus.

Later in the day this woman, who has been identified in media reports as Johannah King-Slutzky,  appeared before the media and demanded that the protesters be given "basic humanitarian aid" from the university so that "they do not die of starvation and dehydration".

You break in and take over a campus building and you don't think to bring food and water?

You then ask the university to deliver it to you?

They need water?  The protestors might die from dehydration?

What is wrong with the drinking fountains in the building or the tap water in the rest rooms?

Do the protestors have to drink Perrier or mountain spring bottled water or they will die of thirst?

King-Slutzky is said to be a PhD student at Columbia as well as an instructor at the school.

She apparently teaches in the English department.

What is King-Slutzky writing her dissertation on ?

(Note: This bio material has now been scrubbed from the Columbia website after the media attention that Ms. King-Slutzky received. She states she has also been suspended from Columbia).

"Theories of the imagination and poetry as interpreted through a Marxian lens in order to update and propose an alternative to historicist ideological critiques of the Romantic imagination?"

What does that even mean?

How is studying that going to make the world a better place or add value to anyone's life?

Is it any surprise that this woman was involved in the campus chaos at Columbia and is also a political strategist for leftist and progressive causes and is active in the higher education labor movement?

An article in the National Review provided some additional biographical details about Johannah King-Slutzky.

According to her LinkedIn page, King-Slutzky is a union steward with the United Auto Workers (UAW) and claims to get “most excited for leftist causes and candidates tackling big issues like labor rights, income inequality, and racial equity.” The Columbia teacher was Refinery29’s Director of Tumblr, where she “developed original video content about social justice issues like Islamophobia,” before she left the post in 2017 to take a more “active” role in democracy by advising the anti-semitic Council on American-Islamic Relations.

You might wonder how a graduate student and instructor as Columbia University can be a union steward for the United Auto Workers?

The UAW is the union representing research and teaching assistants at Columbia.

The UAW turned to organizing in higher education as the number of auto worker jobs disappeared to Japan, Mexico and China.

How much did the Democrat party do to save those jobs?

There is a reason that so many auto workers and other blue collar manufacturing workers support Donald Trump.

You can also assume that when Joe Biden says he has the rank and file support of the UAW he is referring to unionized university employees.

King-Slutzky is writing a dissertation romanticizing Karl Marx and collectivism, supporting Palestine/Hamas in the campus protests, wants Columbia to cut all of its financial ties with Israel, sees Islamophobia as a social justice issue and claims to be concerned about anti-Semitism?

Our student loan funds are going to pay for whatever she is teaching in the classroom (and perhaps her own student loans) and Biden and the Democrats want to cancel the loans?

Here are the demands of the Columbia students who refer to themselves as "Columbia University Apartheid Divest".

Their #1 demand is that Columbia divest of any companies or institutions that profit from Israel.

That standard would mean that most everything in Columbia's $14 billion endowment would have to be divested. U.S. Treasuries would obviously have to be divested. Stock in companies such as Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft. Exxon, Nvidia and the like as well. What large cap companies are not selling products into Israel?

Columbia might be forced to invest its entire endowment in the Iranian dinar (rial) to be safe. I bet that would produce a nice return for those scholarships and financial aid paid for by the endowment to offset Columbia's average annual cost of attendance of $89,857.

What about Russia? Is it ok to invest in companies who do business there?

Somehow the list of demands of the revolutionaries also includes defunding public safety on the Columbia campus and severing all ties with the NYPD. How does this have anything to do with Israel or Palestine?

Could someone help me make sense of any of this?

We are in a place today that is well beyond my level of comprehension.

Would someone at least be a humanitarian and bring me food and  drink so that I can contemplate all of this over a nice meal and attempt to make sense of this?

  1. Funny how this activism ramps up in the months before a presidential election.
